5 Tips to Style Faux Flowers Like a Florist
You've picked out your faux florals. They're sitting on the bench, gorgeous in theory, and now you're wondering why they don't quite look the way you pictured. This is the moment every bride and stylist knows. The flowers are there; the arrangement in your head is somewhere else.
The difference between a faux arrangement that looks deliberate and one that looks like it was wrestled into a vase is almost always technique. Not time, not talent. Just a few decisions made with intention. Our in-house florists have pulled together the five things they come back to every single time.
1. Match your vase shape to your flowers
The most common styling mistake is choosing a vase first, filling it with whatever fits, and wondering why it looks off. Vases and flowers have a relationship, and getting it right is mostly about proportion.
A wide, rounded base with a narrower waist is the right shape for large-headed florals. Think of a classic fishbowl or bubble vase. Chrysanthemum disbuds, garden roses and peonies all have the weight and volume to balance that lower curve. The visual effect is harmonious, and the structure is stable: a top-heavy arrangement in a narrow-based vase will tip.
Once you have the right vessel, check your stem lengths. The flowers should sit clearly above the lip of the vase, not resting on the rim or disappearing inside it. A good starting point: the arrangement above the vase should be roughly the same height as the vase itself.

2. Build your colour palette around shade, not just hue
.
Colour is where most DIY arrangements either sing or fall flat. The rule that makes the biggest difference is matching within a shade family rather than reaching for contrast.
Red and yellow side by side read as confronting; it's not a matter of personal taste, it's how the eye processes stark contrast at close range. The arrangements that feel considered take a different approach. Yellows and oranges sit naturally together. Deep red and a dark burnt orange blend rather than clash. Different shades of the same core colour are the most forgiving combination of all. A soft blush alongside a deeper dusty rose needs almost no effort to look cohesive.
If you are working with a hero colour, pull two to three shades from the same family to surround it. The arrangement will look intentional without having to try hard.

3. Layer your stem heights to create depth

A flat arrangement, with all heads at the same level, loses half its detail. The texture, the way petals fold at different angles, the variation between a tight bud and an open bloom: none of that reads when everything is level.
Instead, stagger your stems so that flowers sit at three distinct heights: low, mid and slightly above. This creates pockets of space the eye travels through, drawing attention into the arrangement rather than across the surface of it. A flower tucked in slightly lower than its neighbours suddenly has presence. A single stem raised above the rest becomes a focal point without any extra effort.
This is the technique that makes a small number of stems look like more than they are.

4. Add one or two stems of faux greenery
.
A foliage stem does more for a faux arrangement than almost any other single addition. It grounds the florals, adds movement and, most importantly, makes the whole thing read as more lifelike.
Choose a darker green leaf over a bright one; deeper tones have more visual weight and look more like real foliage than vivid, flat green. Place one stem at the back of the arrangement, which creates a sense of depth behind the florals. Thread the second stem through the centre of the arrangement, then gently bend the wire stem to the angle and height that works. Faux greenery is forgiving. Adjust it until it settles naturally among the flowers rather than sitting stiffly beside them.
Two stems of foliage are the right number for most arrangements. Any more than that and the foliage begins to compete with the flowers.

5. Start with what you love and build around it

Overcomplicating the arrangement is easier than it sounds, and it is the most reliable way to end up with something that feels like a collection of flowers rather than an arrangement.
Pick the one flower you love most, the bloom you chose the whole arrangement around, and make that your centrepiece. Place it at the heart of the bouquet and let the surrounding flowers serve it. The centrepiece flower stays central, both literally and in terms of visual weight. The supporting stems fill in around it, frame it, and add variation without pulling focus.
You do not need a complicated plan to make this work. You just need to decide which flower is the main character and commit to that decision from the start.
